Nagagami Caribou
This project was developed in part to improve understanding of the caribou population in the PagwachuanCaribou Range. The coordinated approach is part of The Species at Risk Stewardship Fund.
Field based habitat assessments were conducted in wetlands to groundtruth the ecosite attributes of the new enhanced Forest Resource Inventory (eFRI) as interpreted from infrared 3-D imagery of the H
earst and Nagagami Forests. The movements of female caribou equipped with satellite collars were monitored to determine habitats frequented, local ranges, level of isolation, mortality events, potential barriers to movement (natural and anthropogenic), seasonal movements and calving sites. This information will contribute to the overall provincial caribou initiative in determining population status and trends. It will also provide important data to industry and stakeholders to aid in preserving the presence of caribou in the Nagagami area.
As an aid in the promotion for outreach and stewardship a Nagagami Woodland Caribou website has been launched to provide detailed information about the caribou, species at risk, and roles in protection. Educational material in the form of photos, video and classroom activities can also be found here.
