Welcome Message
On behalf of the newly formed Northeast Superior Forest Community Corporation, and the proud community partners from the Townships of Manitouwadge, Hornepayne, White River, Dubreuilville, Municipality of Wawa and the Township of Chapleau, I would like to take the time to introduce you to one of the 11 new Forest Community sites across this great country.
Our project finds its roots in the desire of a group of municipalities to find a way for their residents to continue to live in the Northeast Superior region. Our communities are, in large part, forestry towns. We have had histories steeped in the importance of sawmills and "traditional" forestry operations. Despite recent economic downturns, we continue to place a high value on the forest as one of our greatest assets.
We now face the challenge of adapting to a new reality in the forest industry. Traditional industries are suffering and jobs are being lost at an alarming rate. It is now our responsibility to build a new, prosperous future for those who remain committed to our region. We need to find non-traditional opportunities for economic diversification - from NTFP’s to Bio-energy projects, to educating our citizens and aggressively marketing our assets - we will find success in the coming years.
We are embarking on this journey as a collective, rather than as the silos of the past. This makes our efforts tremendously successful already! We must thank the Natural Resources Canada Forest Communities Program for the great opportunity that has been given to us. We strongly believe that we will show Canada what a small group of Northern Ontario communities can do with the help and support of our government partners.
