About NSFC

The Northeast Superior Forest Community (NSFC) is the term used to describe the regional community served by the Northeastern Superior Mayors’ Group, a voluntary association of the mayors of six communities in the Northeastern superior region, Chapleau, Hornepayne, Dubreuilville, White River, Wawa and Manitouwadge.

In 2005, in the face of the growing crisis in the forestry sector, the mayors’ group set out to develop a shared economic strategy for their communities. Recognizing that their future would continue to depend on the forests, they determined to make the forest resources of the region work for the people who live in the six communities.

In a grant application to new Forest Communities Program of Natural Resources Canada - Canadian Forest Service in 2006, the Mayors’ group designated their region "The Northeast Superior Forest Community" (The mayors considered it appropriate, given the economic condition in the region, that the initials could also stand for Not Sufficient Funds to Cash this Cheque. The name also emphasizes that the people in the region have a direct interest in managing their forests). When the group adopts an official name it may come up with something better.
